Arrival of Tanaji at Singhgarh Fort

According to the orders and wishes of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Subhedar Tanaji reached Kondhana (Singh Garh) fort with a contingent of 342 excellent Maratha soldiers. Conquering this citadel was by no means easy. They planned to enter from the western part of the fort in the dark of night. The Mughals could not even imagine that an attack was possible from there because of the steep cliff located on the western side of the Singhgarh Fort. History of Kondhana (Singhgarh) Fort

It is an ancient hill fort. In earlier times this fort was known as Kondhana. This historical fort of Sinhagad is located 30 km southwest of Pune city in the state of Maharashtra. It was built about 2000 years ago.

In 1328 AD, the emperor of Delhi state, "Muhammad bin Tughlaq" had appointed Koli tribal chiefs. Captured the fort from Dar Nag Nayak.

Shivaji's father Sambhaji Bhosale was the general of Ibrahim Adil Shah I. In his hands was the control of Pune. To establish Swarajya, he defeated Adil Shah's Subhedar Siddi Amber and won the Kondhana (now Singh Garh) fort.

In 1647, Chhatrapati Shivaji renamed the fort as Singh Garh.

In 1649, Shahji Maharaj had to leave the Singhgarh fort to free him from the captivity of Adil Shah.

In 1670, Shahji and Shivaji Maharaj together re-acquired the Singhgarh Fort.

After the death of Sambhaji Maharaj, the Mughals once again conquered this fort.

In 1693, the Marathas conquered the Singhgarh fort due to the efficient leadership of "Sardar Balkwade".

Aurangzeb won this fort in 1703 AD. After about three years, the Marathas won this fort due to the skillful tactics of Sangola, Patanji Shivdev and Visaji Chapra.

Maratha Empire ruled this fort till 1818 AD. After that the British won this fort. It took them 90 days to complete this difficult task.

In those days the Mughal army was in search of Shivaji Maharaj. That's why Shivaji lived in disguise. After some time while wandering he reached the house of a poor Brahmin. This man lived with his mother. And used to run his house by asking for alms. Despite his financial condition being miserable, he respected Shivaji Maharaj as much as he could.

 

One morning Vinayak (Brahmin) came out of the house to beg for alms. Unfortunately they got very little food that day. Then after going home, he made food and fed it to his mother and Shivaji. That night he himself went to sleep hungry.

Seeing this generosity of his family, Shivaji became emotional. He decided to remove Vinayaka's poverty. For this purpose, he sent a letter to a Mughal Sardar there.

It was written in the letter that Shivaji Maharaj has stayed at the Brahmin's house on this day. In exchange for this important information, give 2 thousand Asharfis to this poor Brahmin. The Mughal Subhedar understood the whole thing as soon as he got the letter. Since he was well acquainted with the honesty and nobility of Shivaji Maharaj.

As soon as he got the information, he gave the award to the poor Brahmin and arrested Shivaji Maharaj from his house. After this incident Vinayak (Brahmin) came to know through Tanaji that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself had stayed in his house.

Because of taking shelter in his house, Shivaji fell in the hands of the Mughal army, due to this illusion, the Brahmin started beating his chest and moaning. Then Tanaji consoled him and on the way, fighting with Mughal Subhedar's detachment, freed Shivaji Maharaj.

Keeping in mind the sacrifice of Tanaji Malsure, Shivaji Maharaj named Kondhana Fort as Sinhada (Singh Garh).

The statue of Tanaji Malsure has been installed in the Singhgarh Fort for his mighty might and incomparable courage.

This historical fort became a popular tourist destination of Pune.

The name of the part named "Wakdevadi" of Pune city was changed to "Narbir Tanaji Wadi". Apart from this, many memorials of Tanaji were built in Pune.

Singh Garh Fort also served as a training center at the National Security Academy, Khadakwasla.

In the medieval era, a famous poet named Tulsidas composed the poem "Povada" describing the valor and bravery of Tanaji Malsure.
